Yellow, white, rose, or platinum: which metal suits you?

Gold is not just gold. Behind the word lie at least four different decisions, and none of them is wrong — it depends on you. Here are the facts, without any spin.

Yellow gold is the classic: warm, timeless, instantly recognisable as jewellery. It suits a warm skin tone particularly well, but works with all tones. 14 carat contains more alloy metal and is slightly more robust and less expensive than 18 carat, which has a richer colour. Anyone who thinks classically rarely goes wrong here.

White gold is made pale by alloying with white metals — usually palladium — and is then rhodium-plated. The rhodium plating gives it that cool, platinum-like shine. Important to know: it wears off after one to two years and needs to be refreshed. This is a normal service procedure and no great effort with us, but you should know it before you decide.

Rose gold, also called red gold, has a reddish-warm tone due to a higher copper content. It has been on trend for several years, but it's not a fashion product — it's an old alloy. It flatters many skin tones and often looks softer on the hand than yellow or white gold. That said, copper can cause reactions in those with sensitive skin.

Platinum is the best choice when it comes to long-term wear. It does not change colour, needs no rhodium plating, and is naturally white. It is noticeably denser than gold, which you can feel in the weight — some appreciate this, others find it too heavy. The price is higher, but the benefit is real: a platinum ring holds its shape for a lifetime without needing rework. For a wedding band worn every day, that's a serious argument.

A brief note on nickel: older white gold alloys sometimes contained nickel, which can trigger allergic reactions. Modern alloys use palladium instead. If you or your partner have sensitivities to metals, mention it when we talk — we'll choose the material accordingly.

Which metal is right is not decided by fashion. It's decided by everyday life: will the ring be worn daily? Is there a lot of sport involved? What does the skin tone look like, and what jewellery is already being worn? All questions we can work through together at the table — one espresso, twenty minutes, and you'll know more than after an hour of online research.
