The 2 carat engagement ring
A 2 carat engagement ring is a statement: a diamond that stands out even from a distance and catches light with every movement of the hand. For a long time this size was reachable almost only with a very large budget. Lab-grown diamonds have changed that fundamentally.
At émin you get our Signature ring with a 2-carat lab-grown diamond and a hidden halo or a similar setting from CHF 2'500. Here you'll learn how big 2 carats really are on the finger, who the size suits and what to watch for with such a large stone.

How big is a 2-carat diamond?
A well-proportioned 2-carat round brilliant measures about 8.1 to 8.2 millimetres across. The weight is double that of 1 carat, but the diameter only grows by about a quarter, from roughly 6.5 to just over 8 millimetres. Carat measures volume, while on the finger you only see the surface from above.
Still, the difference is clear: the visible surface is about 60 percent larger than on a one-carat stone. On an average ring finger a 2-carat brilliant covers just under half of the finger's width. The stone looks present, confident and clearly visible, on a petite hand almost opulent.

2 carats by cut: how big the stone looks
At 2 carats, shapes make an even bigger difference. Elongated cuts look noticeably larger on the hand than a round brilliant of the same weight.
| Cut | Dimensions at 2 carats (approx.) | Look on the finger |
|---|---|---|
| Round (brilliant) | approx. 8.1 to 8.2 mm | Maximum sparkle, the timeless classic |
| Oval | approx. 9.8 × 7.2 mm | Looks bigger than round, elegantly lengthens the finger |
| Princess | approx. 6.9 × 6.9 mm | Compact and modern, crisp edges |
| Cushion | approx. 7.3 × 7.3 mm | Soft and romantic, lots of fire |
| Emerald | approx. 8.8 × 6.3 mm | Calm and refined, shows colour and clarity very openly |
| Pear | approx. 10.8 × 7.0 mm | Big presence, soft shape |
| Marquise | approx. 12.7 × 6.3 mm | The largest surface per carat, very striking |

When 2 carats are the right choice
2 carats suit you if you want a ring that is noticed at once, and if the person wearing it enjoys a bold piece. On longer, stronger fingers a 2-carat stone often looks perfectly proportioned, where 1 carat almost disappears. It also makes a beautiful contrast with a simple wedding band.
Worth knowing: 2 carats aren't ideal for every hand. If you work a lot with your hands, in a lab, in care or on a building site, a tall, large stone is more likely to knock against things. A lower setting can help then, or 1.5 carats as a middle ground. At the atelier you try both sizes side by side and quickly notice what feels like you.
Lab-grown makes 2 carats affordable
With diamonds the price doesn't rise in line with the weight. Large rough stones are rare, so a natural 2-carat diamond costs many times as much as a one-carat stone of the same quality. If you want natural and 2 carats, you're in a considerably higher price range, which we're happy to work out openly for your specific stone.
With a lab-grown diamond it's different. It is chemically and optically a real diamond, just grown in a lab, and therefore much more affordable. Our Signature ring combines a 2-carat lab-grown diamond with a hidden halo or a similar setting, in 18K gold or platinum, IGI-certified, from CHF 2'500. So the size that used to be a luxury for few becomes realistic for many couples.
What to watch for at 2 carats
The bigger the stone, the more you see. These points matter more at 2 carats than with smaller diamonds:
Cut quality
A large stone with a weak cut looks glassy or has a dark centre. At 2 carats the top cut grade (Excellent or Ideal) is worth it even more, it decides fire and brilliance.
Colour shows more
On a larger surface a slight yellow tint is noticed sooner. In white gold or platinum we recommend colour D to G at 2 carats. In yellow gold it can be a little warmer.
Check clarity closely
Larger facets show inclusions more clearly. VS1 or VS2 is usually eye-clean, with SI stones we look at each one under the loupe before recommending it to you.
Secure setting
A 2-carat stone needs solid prongs that hold it firmly and are checked regularly. Four or six strong prongs are standard, as is a setting height that suits your everyday life.
Certificate
Every stone comes with a certificate: IGI (International Gemological Institute) for lab-grown diamonds, GIA (Gemological Institute of America) for natural ones. It lists the 4Cs and the exact dimensions.
Hidden halo: more sparkle, no bigger head
With a hidden halo, a fine ring of small diamonds sits below the main stone, on the side of the setting. From above you only see the large brilliant, from the side the halo flashes with every movement. It gives the ring depth and sparkle without making the stone look artificially bigger from above.
At 2 carats in particular this is a lovely solution, because the stone is already big enough on its own. The prongs hold the diamond securely, the hidden halo makes it special in profile too. In our conversation we also show you alternatives, such as a simple prong setting or a setting with a fine pavé band.

Our tiers compared
Every tier is a complete ring, not a loose stone. We work out the exact price for your ring openly with you.

Frequently asked questions
A well-proportioned 2-carat round brilliant measures about 8.1 to 8.2 millimetres across. An oval stone is around 9.8 × 7.2 millimetres, a pear around 10.8 × 7.0 millimetres. The exact dimensions of your stone are always stated on the certificate.
With a lab-grown diamond you get our Signature ring at émin with 2 carats and a hidden halo or similar setting from CHF 2'500, in 18K gold or platinum and IGI-certified. A natural 2-carat diamond is considerably higher. We work out that price openly for your specific stone.
That depends on your hand and your everyday life. On longer fingers 2 carats often look perfectly proportioned, on very petite hands rather opulent. People who work a lot with their hands sometimes choose a lower setting. It's best to try 1, 1.5 and 2 carats side by side at the atelier.
No. The weight doubles, but the diameter only grows from about 6.5 to about 8.1 millimetres, so by roughly a quarter. The visible surface is around 60 percent larger. The difference is still clearly visible, especially when you compare both directly on the finger.
With a large stone, colour shows more. In white gold or platinum we therefore recommend colour D to G, in yellow gold it can be warmer. For clarity, VS1 or VS2 is usually eye-clean. The cut remains most important, because it decides how much the stone sparkles.
Yes, if the setting is right. We rely on strong prongs that hold the stone firmly and choose the setting height to suit your everyday life. Have the prongs checked about once a year, especially if you wear the ring daily. We're happy to do that for you.
A hidden halo is a fine ring of small diamonds below the main stone. From above you hardly see it, from the side it sparkles with every movement. It gives the ring more brilliance in profile without artificially enlarging the stone from above.
