What happens to the old gold
Old gold is rarely usable in the state it arrives in. Rings from earlier decades often have a different purity than 18k gold, and sometimes silver or copper is mixed in, changing colour or hardness. That's why we first check what purity is actually there, usually with a small, simple test at the atelier.
In most cases we melt the old gold down and re-alloy it to 18k so it matches the quality of your new wedding rings. That's not a detour, it's the honest route: you know exactly what ends up on your finger, instead of an unclear mix of several old pieces.

In almost every case, yes. We first check the purity and condition of the gold, then tell you openly whether it can be used directly or whether we need to melt it down and re-alloy it. Only with very low purity or a lot of foreign material does the credited value come out noticeably lower.
We weigh the gold at the atelier and determine its purity, then work out the material value openly based on the current gold price. That amount is deducted directly from the price of your new wedding rings. You see every figure in writing before you decide.
Tell us that right at the start, we carefully remove the stone from the old setting and check whether it can be worked into your new wedding rings. A small diamond or coloured stone can often become a quiet detail in one of the two bands, and we'll show you sketches of how that could look before anything is made.
No, we take care of that. Bring the ring exactly as it is, even if it's scratched, bent or tarnished. For testing and later melting the outward condition doesn't matter, only the actual purity counts.
From the material check and approved design we usually plan two to four weeks, similar to newly made wedding rings. If you're combining gold from several people or want a more elaborate setting, it can take a little longer, and we'll tell you that early in the conversation.
Yes, many couples do exactly that: one ring from each side of the family, melted together into a new pair. That way both wedding rings carry a piece of both stories, and you decide together on shape and setting. Chains, pendants or loose earrings can be added too, as long as we can check their purity first.
