What we look for in a round brilliant
With a brilliant, cut quality, often called the cut grade, shapes the sparkle more than colour or clarity do. A stone graded Excellent or Very Good reflects light optimally, while a stone cut too deep or too shallow looks dull despite good clarity. We show you this difference directly under a loupe.

Excellent Cut is the highest cut-quality grade for a round brilliant, awarded by labs such as GIA or IGI. It reflects how precise the stone's proportions, symmetry and polish are. An excellently cut stone reflects light optimally and looks noticeably more alive than one with a medium grade, regardless of carat weight.
Cutting a round brilliant loses more of the rough stone than fancy cuts like oval or princess, which use the rough more efficiently. That higher material loss, together with the demanding calculation of 57 facets, usually makes the brilliant a bit pricier at the same carat weight.
