Proposing in Zurich: 12 spots we love

There is no perfect place to propose, only the place that fits the two of you. Still, we hear the same question almost every week in the atelier: where in Zurich is the best place to ask? We put together twelve spots where we personally know couples who popped the question, described honestly, including the moments when they get crowded or impractical. A good proposal spot is rarely the most spectacular one, usually it's the one where you have both already felt genuinely at ease.

What makes a good proposal spot in Zurich

Before picking one of the twelve, a quick reality check helps. Zurich is not an empty city, and on a nice weekend the well-known viewpoints fill up with tourists and locals alike. That's not a dealbreaker, but plan for it instead of being surprised. If quiet matters more to you than the perfect photo backdrop, choose a weekday or an early hour, and keep a backup plan in your pocket in case it rains or the spot turns out busier than hoped.

The 12 spots, described honestly

• Lindenhof: the historic terrace above the old town, with views of the Limmat, the Grossmünster and the rooftops. Lively at sunset and on nice weekends, noticeably quieter on a weekday morning.
• Uetliberg: Zurich's local mountain with a panorama over the lake, the city and, on a clear day, the Alps. The train gets you up in about twenty minutes; the summit is busy on nice Sundays, quieter early in the morning or on weekdays.
• Lake promenade at Bürkliplatz: the classic lakeside walk with Alpine views on a clear day. Busy in summer and on weekends, a weekday evening is quieter and just as beautiful.
• Rieterpark: a lesser-known park by the Museum Rietberg, with old trees and lake views from above. Noticeably quieter than the promenade, a good retreat in almost any season.
• Chinagarten: the Chinese Garden at Zürichhorn, small and ticketed, but almost always manageable in size. Especially beautiful during spring blossom, with reduced hours in winter, worth checking online first.
• Dolderbahn: the historic funicular up to the Dolder, the ride itself is already a small moment for the two of you. A view over the city at the top, though nice weekends also draw other visitors.
• ETH Polyterrasse: the well-known terrace with an open view over the whole city, free and open around the clock. Popular at golden hour in the evening, and accordingly rarely empty.
• Boat from Bürkliplatz: a proposal aboard a lake cruise boat, with Alpine views from the water. Needs some planning ahead, boats get booked up on nice summer days.
• Succulent collection: an almost secret botanical garden at Mythenquai, with hundreds of cacti and succulents under glass. Free, small and usually surprisingly quiet, our insider tip for a calm moment.
• Irchelpark: a sprawling park in the north of the city, with ponds and plenty of green, popular with students from the nearby university. Quiet on weekdays, well visited by families and joggers on warm weekends.
• Zürichhorn: the lakeside park with the sculpture "Heureka" and views across the bay towards the old town. Very busy on summer weekends, a quiet walk on weekdays or out of season.
• Käferberg: a wooded hill in the northwest with a lookout tower, far less known than the Uetliberg. A panorama over the city and the Alps on a clear day, almost no one else around, especially on weekdays.

How to prepare the moment

Whichever spot you choose, a quick test visit beforehand helps you know what it actually looks like at your intended time of day. If you want to bring a professional photographer, check in advance whether some parks or the Chinagarten require a permit; casual photos between the two of you are fine everywhere. Carry the ring securely, ideally in a small inner pocket rather than loose in a trouser pocket, and have a weather backup for outdoor viewpoints like the Uetliberg or the Polyterrasse, Zurich isn't always kind to outdoor plans.
