Engraving ideas for wedding and engagement rings

An engraving is the one detail on your ring nobody else sees, unless you choose to show it. At émin in Zurich District 4, engraving on wedding bands is part of the service, and for engagement rings and other pieces we advise you honestly on technique, typeface and character limits.

A date, the coordinates of a proposal, both your initials, a fingerprint or a short line in your own language: here are the engraving ideas for wedding and engagement rings that work best for us, and what actually fits on which ring width.

Why plan your engraving with us

Included with wedding bands

With wedding bands from émin, an engraving is part of the service, no hidden surcharge.

An honest choice of technique

We tell you whether laser or hand engraving suits your wish and your ring better, rather than simply selling one.

Multiple languages possible

German, English, Turkish, Albanian or another language that matters to you, we advise on legibility and space.

Laser or hand engraving: the honest difference

With laser engraving, the text or symbol is burned into the shank with a fine laser beam. The result is precise, even, and works especially well for small text, numbers or symbols like coordinates. Most standard typefaces and many handwriting styles can be reproduced cleanly by laser, as long as the source is clear enough.

Hand engraving feels more personal, because every line is cut by hand, with slight, deliberate irregularities. It suits larger, classic lettering well, but takes more work and isn't sensible for every ring or every text size. We show you both at the atelier on sample pieces, so you can see the difference directly before deciding.

What an engraving costs

Not every idea fits every ring

Very small text, complex symbols, or alphabets with a lot of detail need more space than a narrow shank offers. We tell you honestly if an idea won't work cleanly on your ring, and suggest an alternative that stays just as personal.

Frequently asked questions

Yes. With wedding bands from émin, a standard engraving, such as names, a date or a short line, is part of the service, no extra charge. More elaborate requests, like a scanned fingerprint, we discuss individually, usually with little or no additional cost.

It depends heavily on the ring width. A narrow shank of about 2 mm fits roughly 12 to 15 characters, a medium width of 3 to 4 mm around 18 to 22. From 5 mm width there's also room for two lines or a short sentence. We show you the exact limit on the ring itself.

Yes, it's one of our most popular ideas. You write the text on paper, we scan it and transfer it as faithfully as possible onto the ring. A clear, not overly ornate source is important, so the engraving stays legible even in small text.

Laser engraving is precise, even, and works well for small text and symbols. Hand engraving feels more personal, since every line is cut by hand, but needs more space and takes more work. We show you both on sample pieces before you decide.

In many cases yes, as long as the shank has enough material and space. Just bring your ring to the atelier, we'll check the shank and tell you whether and how a later engraving is possible, without damaging the ring.

We engrave in German, English, Turkish, Albanian and other languages using the Latin alphabet, as well as numbers and common symbols. For other writing systems we check beforehand whether legibility and character width work at your ring size, and tell you honestly.

For pendants, bracelets or engagement rings, we calculate the engraving separately, depending on technique, piece and number of characters. After a short conversation at the atelier or by video, we give you the price openly before any work begins.
